At Scribeist, we believe in the power of human creativity and are committed to preserving and enhancing it—not replacing it. Our platform is built with writers at its core, and we offer optional AI features designed to work alongside you as supportive tools, never as substitutes for your creative voice.

This AI Usage Policy explains how artificial intelligence is implemented on our platform, what data is processed, and how you maintain complete control over when and how AI features are used with your work.

1. Opt-In AI Features Only

No AI features run automatically or in the background. Every AI-powered tool on Scribeist requires your explicit activation. You choose when, where, and how to use AI assistance with your creative work. If you never use an AI feature, your work is never processed by AI services.

2. Third-Party AI Services

All AI features on our platform are powered by third-party service providers, including:

  • OpenAI
  • Anthropic (Claude)
  • Perplexity

When you choose to use an AI feature, your work or selected portions of it may be transmitted to these third-party services for processing. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these providers to understand how they handle data.

3. AI Training and Data Usage

Model Training

We have configured our API accounts and organizational settings with third-party AI providers to ensure that your data is not used to train or improve their AI models. This means:

  • Your API inputs, outputs, and logs are not included in model fine-tuning, supervised learning, or reinforcement learning processes.
  • Your creative work is not incorporated into the training data used to develop future versions of AI models.
  • We do not use your work to train our own AI systems, and we do not share your content with AI providers for training purposes.

Temporary Data Retention

While your data is not used for training, third-party AI providers may temporarily retain data for operational purposes:

  • Retention Period: Data may be stored for up to 30 days after processing.
  • Purpose: During this period, data is used only for detecting misuse or abuse (such as spam or harmful content), ensuring system reliability, and debugging API issues.
  • Deletion: After the retention period, data is deleted unless required by law or for investigating security incidents.

This temporary retention is standard practice for maintaining service quality and security, and does not involve using your content for model training or improvement.

4. Identifying AI Features

Transparency is important to us. All features that utilize artificial intelligence are clearly labeled as "AI" or include the word "Generate" in their naming or description. If a feature is not explicitly identified as AI-powered, it does not use artificial intelligence.

5. Scope of Data Transmission

The amount of your work sent to AI services varies by feature:

  • Basic AI Features: Most AI tools only process selected text or specific portions of your work that you choose to analyze or enhance.
  • Advanced Analysis Features: Deeper analytical features may require processing larger portions or your entire manuscript to provide comprehensive insights. These features will clearly indicate the scope of data being processed.

While we have taken steps to ensure your work remains private through our agreements with AI providers, please understand that by using these features, you are choosing to share your content with third-party services, and we cannot exercise complete control over their data handling practices.

6. Future Developments

Proprietary AI Models

We are actively developing our own AI infrastructure that will allow us to process your work entirely within our secure environment, eliminating the need to transmit data to third-party services. This will provide enhanced privacy and control over your creative work. We will notify users when this option becomes available.

Bring Your Own API Key

Scribeist now supports Bring Your Own Key plans through OpenRouter. This gives you direct control over AI billing for supported features while still using Scribeist's AI workflows and model routing.

7. AI-Generated Content and Ownership

You retain full ownership of your content. This includes both your original prompts and any AI-generated output you receive through our platform ("AI Output").

Our third-party AI providers, including OpenAI, assign all rights, title, and interest in AI Output to you, subject to applicable law. We do not claim any ownership over your content, whether created by you or generated with AI assistance.

By using our platform, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store and process your inputs and AI outputs solely for the purpose of providing and improving our service. This license does not transfer ownership and terminates when you delete your content or close your account.

8. Your Control and Choices

You maintain complete control over AI usage:

  • You can choose to never use AI features, and your work will never be processed by AI services.
  • You can selectively use AI features only when you find them beneficial.
  • You can review which features use AI before activating them.
  • You maintain ownership and rights to all your creative work, regardless of AI usage.

9. Changes to This Policy

As AI technology and our platform evolve, we may update this AI Usage Policy. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. We will notify users of significant changes through email or platform notifications.
